I am excited to tell you all about the tour my son and I had to Costas Candies in Owatonna, Minnesota and about the wonderful candies we brought home to review and share with our family (Yup! I am having a giveaway of a 1 pound box of assorted Costas Candies.

I first want to tell you a little bit about Costas. Costas Candies and Restaurant is located in downtown Owatonna Minnesota and has been a family owned business since 1919. There is 2 parts to their business which includes a restaurant that is makes delicious food from scratch and the other part is their candy store and kitchen. When you walk in to Costas the first thing you see is the case full of candy. It's hard to miss all the brightly colored wrappers and the row of chocolate bunnies and ducks.

On our tour, my friend Julie, who owns Costas with her husband and his family, told us all about how each of the different varieties of candies are handmade at Costas. We were able to go back in the candy kitchen (which is separate from the restaurant kitchen) and see just where everything is made and watch some chocolate bunnies being made. The handmade candies they make include Truffles, English Toffee, Buttercremes, Pecan Turtles, Nut Clusters, Caramels and Peanut Butter Cups (a new offering).

Here are just a couple picture of my son looking at some of the candies in the display.  The bottom picture he is pretending to be a candy monster. The truffles and buttercremes were his favorites because he really likes chocolates.

The box of assorted candies was perfect for us because each person in our family likes some different than the other more. My favorites are the English Toffee and Caramels. My daughter is a bit of a sugar fiend and won't turn away any candy, but she gravitated towards the flavored buttercremes. My husband claimed nut clusters and peanut butter cups as his.

It was interesting to watch them making some chocolate (I think these are the ducks in this picture). Pictured on the side of the upside ducks is a machine that continually stirs the chocolate to keep it from hardening so that someone can make candy after candy. All of their chocolate candies are hand dipped and the chocolate bunnies and ducks are hand made by pouring in chocolate to each mold one at a time and tapping it to cover the entire mold and pouring in more when needed and tapping more. Each one of these delicious Easter creatures is made by hand by a person.

Here are some of the chocolate ducks that were just made and are cooling in their molds.

They even have a mold to make this giant chocolate bunny. Can you believe the size of this bunny? It is bigger than my son's head. He couldn't believe the size of this one. I think my kids' eyes would pop out of their heads if they saw this in their Easter Baskets.

These are the warmers for the milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Other than that warming and stirring the chocolate, everything done to make the candies they sell are all done by hand. There is no assembly lines or machines making candy, which makes for a very low environmental impact on the creation of their candies.

They are constantly making different batches of candy because they do no use an preservatives in their candies. Because they do no use any preservatives in their candies, they have a shelf life of of 2 months. But seriously, who is going to take that long to eat the candy. Our 1 pound box barely lasted a week. When you buy candy from Costas you are buying fresh hand made candy that is free of preservatives.

This is the stir stick that they use when making caramels and toffee. They weren't making caramels or toffee when we were there but we did see the huge kettle they make them in and the cement table that they are made and molded on.

My son picked out what he thought his favorite piece would be to sample before we left the store and he picked out a peppermint buttercreme.

Sure enough, he popped that whole thing in his mouth. I think I need to teach him a little bit about savoring and mindful eating.

Costas Candies also makes a basket out of chocolate. My son was in awe of that. He was just amazed that someone could get not only a chocolate bunny and beautifully wrapped (yes, those are all hand wrapped too) truffles and buttercremes, but also a basket completely made of chocolate that all of these delicacies are stuffed in to.

Right now they can ship to anywhere in the United States you want to have chocolate shipped too, but shipping will stop during the summer months when the chocolate will melt and resume again in the fall. Although, you can always walk in to the store and buy some chocolates or caramels or toffee at any time of the year you wan.

My Thoughts:

I was very interested in trying out this Swim On Swim Cap for Long, Thick and Curly Hair because I have quite a large head and a thick mop of hair. My hair will continue to grow longer and I know it will make fitting it in a swim cap harder. Plus, I really like wearing a swim cap over my ears because I hate water getting in my ears and this looks like it would be large enough to do that and it is.

I was sent a blue swim cap that was plain on both sides. There was no printing on either side. I don't mind that, but I wanted to mention in case it mattered to someone else.

I had read the reviews of an odor when you open the package. The only odor I noticed when I first opened it was that of silicone, which I expected since it is a silicone cap and all other silicone caps we have purchased have that same silicone odor when you take it out of the package. After it sat out for a couple days I didn't notice any more odor at all, but I would think the odor is pretty typical of silicone caps that are package up.

It is a VERY large cap. I included a picture so that you can see the size compared to a normal swim cap that my daughter wheres for competitive swimming. I don't think I would wear this to swim laps unless I had enough hair to fill out the cap. I do think it would be a great cap to wear if you are doing water aerobics or pool walking. I also think it works well as a shower cap when you need to freshen up but don't want to wet your hair or pull it back.

#ad How to Make Custom Marbled Gift Boxes PLUS GIVEAWAY for 10 Gift Boxes

Directions:

Supplies needed:

• Acrylic paint
• Shaving cream
• Knife or stick
• White Gift Boxes
• Squigee
• Large container or box

To make these custom marble gift boxes, it doesn't take much time and they dry fairly quickly, but I would allow 24 hours before packaging them up to give away just to be sure everything has cured.

1. Just spray shaving cream in the bottom of a large container or box. 
2. Drizzle a variety of acrylic paint colors over the shaving cream. 
3. Cut in the paint to the shaving cream to create swirls (don't overs to this or the colors will become muddled). 
4. Dip your box or paper on the top layer of painted shaving cream.
5. Using a squigee, scrape off the shaving cream. Don't worry, the paint will stay on.
6. Allow to dry for 24 hours before handling

I did mine in the bathroom so that I could easily wash off my squigee from excess shaving cream.

My Thoughts

I was excited to try out this pack of 10 gift boxes from MyPresentforyou because I knew it was going to be fun to decorate up a blank canvas. The boxes are all white and come in a set of 10 of them. The size of mine are 9x4.5x4.5 which is a decent size for a lot of things including some of my handmade pottery items and bakery goods.

The boxes do come with little bows that you can use. There are no instructions on how to use the bows, but you just pull the little bow strands in the center between the bigger ribbon strands and pull until you have made the bow and then tie it so that it stays in place. I used the bow on my first time using one of these gift boxes because I had done the marble technique and didn't want to take away from having the recipient see that. But other times I think I will leave the box a plain white and really do up the bows and ribbons with other ones I use. The possibilities are endless on how to decorate up these boxes whether you are changing up the ribbon or decorating the box. I even thinking that the next present my kids have to give someone I will let them color on the box and put stickers to make it more fun for them.

My Thoughts:

I was excited to be able to try out the Lightload Easy Carry Beach Towel. I knew 3 ways that I was going to use them, but the other ideas of how to use them are limitless.

Both my kids are on swim team, so having an extra towel around is never a bad idea, or just having one on hand in the car. In the winter we can use the towel as a blanket if we were to get stranded and then have it on hand in case one of my kids forget to pack their towel. I also thought it would be great to have in the car all the other months for when I take my kids to the park and the slides and swings are wet, plus we can also use when we head to the pool or the beach and someone forgets a towel. Finally, when my husband saw this he immediately thought this would be a good idea to have on the boat. We usually bring along plenty of towels if we are going tubing, but there are other times we might just be boating and somehow get wet and need to dry off or we need an extra layer to keep us warm if there is a cool breeze.

I used the towel after swimming laps at the gym today and was surprised that a woman asked me about it. She said she thought it was really cool looking and wanted to know why it was different than the other (beach) towel I also had. I told her it was super light and compact, but big and I brought both along because after swimming one gets wet from going from the pool to the locker room and I wanted another one to dry off with after my shower and have one to stand on (my wet beach towel, I don't like standing on locker room floors for too long with bare feet). She asked me if she could feel it and she said she thought it was so neat and was going to look it up when she got home.

DIY Pop Art Water Spot Coasters, plus a GIVEAWAY for Tootsie Roll K-Cups #ad

This project is the perfect way to re-use your used K-Cups and make something useful out of them. I used K-Cups from Tootsie Roll Hot Cocoa K-Cups that have not internal packaging, so they are easy to remove the foil and rinse out to use for this project.

I thought it would be fun to come up with some crafts to re-use K-Cups with. We don't use a lot of K-Cups, but I do like having them for when my husband is traveling for work and I need a quick cup of coffee before taking the kids to school and volunteering. I also like that my daughter can easily make herself a cup of hot cocoa. Anyways - time to tell you how I made this project. 

4 Tile Coasters Cost Me $1.50 to Make!!!!!

When I say $1.50, that is my out of pocket cost from purchasing 4 plain white tiles from Lowe's and 1 piece of felt and 1 tube of point (I was out of red) from Wal-Mart to make these. I had all the other paint colors I wanted to use, so I only needed to purchase the one. I also had the brushes and Fabric-Tac that I used to glue the felt pieces on the back, as well as a can of Hi-Glass clear lacquer (going need to purchase that soon for an upcoming project.)

I need to paint 2-3 coats of each color on the tiles, letting it dry in between coats. Then dipped a K-Cup in paint and pressed it on tile allowing it to smudge and drip (if it did) to have it look like actual water rings spots.

After acrylic paint is completely dry, spray with the clear spray paint. I did 2 coats, allowing it to dry between coats.

When that paint is cured (allow 24 hours), glue down pieces of felt that you have cut just smaller than the tiles to the back with some Fabric-Tac.

I made these for our own use, but I thinking of having the kids each make one for their teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week in May and giving it to them with a box of tea. I was perhaps thinking of making a week's worth of gifts all along the "hot beverage theme". Stay tuned and see what else I come up with.

My Thoughts:

My family and I have tried all of the flavors included in the Tootsie Roll Hot Cocoa for K-Cup Brewers: Tootsie Roll, Sugar Babies, Junior Mint and Charleston Chew (in the flavors of Vanilla, Strawberry, and Chocolate) and they taste awesome, just how you expect each of the candy flavors to taste in a hot cocoa version. My favorite is Sugar Babies, but that is because it is my favorite of the candies listed. I did have an issue of some of the cocoa mix being left in the Charleston Chew flavors, but it still made a full cup and just tasted slightly watered down. All the other flavors made full cups and pretty much emptied the K-cup. I would not hesitate to get this variety pack again for my family. I do love that it is a variety pack because we have so many choices and we can pick one that suits our mood that day. I did want to add that I compared the nutritional info on this with a name brand hot cocoa packet (from a box of 10 packets) and the amount of sugar in the K-Cup was less than half, plus it has 40 less calories and half the amount of fat. I thought these tasted better than the packets I have.

If you aren't making your own homemade hot cocoa and are using packets, this produces just as much waste. Although, you can re-use the K-Cup for this craft project and more that I will share with you later. There is no internal pieces to this k-cup like there is on coffee and tea ones, so this has less waste than those.
