FREE Admission to MN History Centers for 6th Graders

I almost forgot about telling you about this, as I went ahead and purchased a family membership to the Minnesota Historical Society. All 6th graders in MN can get a FREE Pass to get FREE Admission in to all of the historical sites in MN. Of course, the rest of the family still has to pay, but you at least get one person in free.

This might be a fun idea to have with you when you are planning your upcoming summer vacations because it is good through the end of August.

And if you have a 5th grader, remember this for September!

Where Did We Go Wednesday? Science Museum of MInnesota

As I mentioned last week when we had gone to the winter carnival we coupled it with a trip to the Science Museum of Minnesota.

We had renewed our membership and we're were excited to check out what was new and see a film at the Omni Theater.

Omnifest is actually going on so there is a variety of films to choose from some new and some older. We ended up seeing Rocky Mountain Express. Because we are members we are able to see a free movie each time we go and we can book our tickets online in advance for free. It used to not be free to book it online so I was happy that it was. With it being omnifest The movies do fill up quickly. When we arrived at the Museum there was a sign saying that the next show wasn't until later in the evening then we were seeing a show so I was very pleased we booked it in advance.

We spent most of our 4 hours there doing all the different special projects they had set up for the day. The Omni movie was 45 minutes long and we watched a couple 10-15 minute long presentations.

The picture above is of the frozen Mississippi River as seen in February from the top floor in the Science Museum.

Where Did We Go Wednesday? Dinosaurs at SMM

Looking for a different slant on a spooky activity to do for the month of October and Halloween, then go check out all the bones of the dinosaurs at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Nothing says Halloween like skulls and bones.

Two days before school started the kids that I decided to go check out the Science Museum and get some learning started early. I know I have shared images of the Science Museum of Minnesota before but it always serves as a nice reminder of this valuable resource we have in our state. My son loves the dinosaurs. And this was his choice of where he wanted to go for sure when we visited this last time.

While we were there we watched an Omni Theater presentation of Journey to the South Pacific but it is leaving there soon and a new movie is coming.

The Pixar exhibit has just left and a new exhibit is coming as well. You can see from the picture I took both the movie and the new exhibit are coming October 13th.

Smithsonian FREE Museum Day is coming up soon!! 9/23/17

We have taken advantage of this opportunity a few times in the past and I have in the back of my head as a possibility for our Girls Weekend, in case of inclement weather and we can't be on the beach, plus who know what Irma is going to do the beaches in Florida (yes, that is where we are heading). There are a TON of museums participating in Florida (85 to be exact!), but if you one of my many readers from MN, there are 26 to choose from here. Or for my readers from WI, there are 14 to choose from.

Where Did We Go Wednesday? Science Museum of Minnesota

I honestly think it was 10 months since we have been to the Science Museum of Minnesota. I think we have just been busy and we went to some other science museums when we were traveling and then let our membership lapse, but now we are back and renewed our membership.

Since we had not been there in a while, there were some new things going on including a new exhibit called Sportsology, which was a lot of fun and eventually we did get around to most of the exhibits within this one. Most the exhibits within this one are stuff you actually get to do and be quite physical.

We also saw the new IMAX movie in the OMNI Theater called "A Beautiful Planet", we were at the 2pm showing and it ended up being a sold out show (they show it every hour on the hour!) It was very good and quite interesting and I learned a few things from it. We also did some experiments in the lab there. I was with my daughter and we did an experiment to learn about enzymes in our saliva that break down our food. My son went in to the lab with his dad and did his first experiment in there.

Where Did We Go Wednesday? Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL

These are some of my favorites from the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach Florida. They offer a evening hours on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. called Art After Dark. This was one of our evening excursions when my husband and I took our 15 year anniversary trip to Florida.

It is a free museum and there is a variety of different exhibitions and collections there. I would plan to spend about an hour here.

FREE Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day is this Saturday!!!!

This Saturday is the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, which gets you free admission to a lot of museums across the US. You do have to pick out a museum and print off certificate in advance of going. You must have this certificate in order to get FREE ADMISSION.

There are 18 locations in Minnesota listed. In the past the Minnesota State Historic Sites had participated in this program, but it doesn't look like they are anymore (insert my sad face here). This weekend we won't be near any on the list, but if we in the Twin Cities or our home I would check out the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, The Works Museum (kids science museum) or the Steele County Historical Society Museum.

Wordless Wednesday: Aitkin Depot Museum

My family and I had a good time exploring the Aitkin Depot Museum. There is quite a bit to look at and it is very inexpensive to go there, so I think we will make another trip there when we are looking for something to do when we are at the cabin.

Wordless Wednesday: Spring Break at Minnesota Children's Museum & Candyland

My son's is in a different town than his sister's school, so he had a week long spring break (she only got 2 days off surrounding Easter :(  ). We did a few fun things together by ourselves and with friends. One of the days we took a day trip to the Minnesota Children's Museum and Candyland (plus a stop at a park in Lakeville on our way home.)

Wordless Wednesday: Rochester MN Children's Museum exhibits thru June

Do you live in the area and are looking for something fun to do with your kids for Spring Break?

Then I highly suggest checking out the Rochester Children's Museum of Minnesota.

Now through June 7 is the Creativity Jam and it is filled with all the fun Hands-On activities I have pictured here.

They are only open Wed-Sun, so be sure to plan you break accordingly.

Admission is only $5.50 a person, so it is very reasonable. Or if you have a membership to another children's museum you can get 50% off. If you have a Deluxe Family Membership to the Twin Cities Minnesota Children's Museum you can get in FREE!

This one exhibit is the Ag Cab Lab and is there until July 12th.
