Accelerated Reader Books about Easter for 3rd and 4th graders

These are from a couple of posts I did in years past that I wanted to share again!

AR (Accelerated Reader) Books at 8.0+ Reading Level

 

I went in search of books for my 6th grade daughter to read that are interesting and appropriate for her 
age, plus taking in to consideration she has had enough social studies to mostly understand the social 
contructs of a given time period. He most recent AR test put her at a 9.0-12.0 reading level. There goes
 all the Harry Potter books she loves (except one, which you will see below and she will be excited to 
know I requested from the library.) Do you know how hard it is to find books that are at that level that 
are appropriate for an 11 year old to read and doesn't require prior knowledge of historical events or 
social constructs in foreign lands? It is not easy. 

Sure I can find lots of non-fiction, but some of it starts to get really technical and, frankly, are of topics 
that would bore her. I am sure I will have to look again when my son gets to this level, as his interest 
in non-fiction topics is different than hers. When I was looking up books that are popular among teens 
and tweens the books were often in the 4.5-6.5 grade levels. Honestly, I saw several books we read for 
book club that are 6.5-7.5 levels.

On these lists I made, I have only read 3 of the books in the non-fiction category, 2 of which I own and will 
give her to read. Luckily, the library system has a bunch and the ones I included are ones I can find within 
our system. I didn't include any that were not available. I like to make up these lists so I can go back and 
reference them when she needs more books, or when my son reaches these levels. No sense re-doing 
all the research when I can just save it and share with my readers. I looked to see if anyone had a list out 
there list this and couldn't find one. Next year, I don't believe she has AR anymore, so she can read some 
of those 4.5-6.5 books that are popular (that were not appropriate for her at the age she was when she 
was at that level.)

Rolled Book Page Wreath - This one looks like it may take a bit of time, but if you have time to spare you could make this beautiful looking wreath from Brassy Apple. 

Book Necklace -  This is just darling and looks like it is a quick and easy gift to make. You can find the tutorial on the Darice website.

Fabric Covered Book - I am just in love with all the beautiful colors of fabric used in these journals. I have made a few of these before and they are always well received. Check out how they are make on two twenty-one

Paper Mache Bowl - What a clever use of an old book that is falling apart or just something you picked up at a thrift store. See how to make your own on The Lulu Bird.

Hardcover Book Purse - OMG! I have to make this! I just need to find a book with a really interesting cover to make this with the tutorial on HGTV and then I can use the pages from inside for some of these other crafts.

FREE Summer Reading Programs

Barnes and Noble : Turn it in between May 17 - September 6th and earn a free book. For grades 1-6.

Local Libraries: We are sandwiched between 2 towns, so free frequent and participate in both reading programs. Libraries often offer activities and events throughout the summer for children to keep them coming to the library all summer long. You could find some free entertainment for the kids this way!

Pottery Barn Story Time: Attend 5 story times and get a free gift, check back to see if they offer their summer reading program as well

Scholastic: Begins May 9th. Check out their book lists and ideas for activities.

Sylvan Book Adventure: Kids read books, take quizzes and earn prizes. Not sure what the prizes are this year but a couple years ago my daughter did it and got a 6 month subscription to Highlights magazine as a prize.

Chuck E Cheese: Read for 2 weeks and get 10 FREE Tokens

Showcase Cinemas: For my readers on the East Coast, kids get in free on Wednesdays with a book report to select shows. Under 6 are free without a book report.

TD Bank: Another for the East Coast Readers, kids get $10 in a new or existing saving account at TD Bank when they complete the form with 10 books read.

Our closest Barnes and Noble is about an hour away, so we usually combine it with some other summer field trip I plan with the kids and hit up the one at the Mall of America.

If I had to guess what books they would pick, I am sure my daughter will pick the American Girl one "Lea Dives In". For my son, I am inclined to say he might pick out the "My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish".

Wow! I am so glad I kept looking. My first list was only of 15 different series, but here I found 20 more series that are at the 5th grade reading level. This should keep my daughter busy for a while. I know some of these genres are not her cup of tea, but it will give her stuff to look up and consider. And maybe when my son gets around to this level, he might like different ones.

My daughter is on swim team and loves it. This was her second year on swim team and as she invests more of her time, energy and heart in to the sport  while at the pool she has also wanted to learn more about when she is just hanging out.
