Pottery Plant Tray

I made this pottery plant try via slab rolling to act as a base for these three potted aloe vera plants. I actually rooted these three baby aloe vera plants from my mother plant before potting them up for this gift that I gave to a friend for her birthday (which happens to be today).

Easy to Root Spider Plants

How about a Spider Plant for Halloween!

Want an easy to grow plant that gives you baby plants that can easily root and grow more.....then you definitely need to check out growing spider plants. They are great for helping cleanse the air in your home and are very tolerant of many growing conditions, as long you give them some sunlight and remember to water them at least occasionally.

This is a container filled with about 6 babies. I put them in water (about 1/4 way up the plants) and set it in the window and after 2 weeks you see they have rooted and are ready to be transplanted in to their own pots.

Wordless Wednesday: Cabin Plants

I took these pictures with my phone, so they aren't the best quality. I just wanted to share some pictures of the beautiful plants at our new cabin. It's fall now and everything is going to die back, but I can come back this winter and spring and see what is going to pup up all around us.

Thrifty Thursday: Use Humidifier Water

Don't think of it as free water you are throwing away when you dump out your humidifier water because it is anything but. You paid to run that humidifier, so in essence, you paid for that water. You are just using the water you paid for the water your plants.

This summer it has been so humid that I have a full container every day. Why pay for more water to water the plants that need it so badly.

Thrifty Thursday: Pot Up Your Own Flower Pots

If you like to have flowers in pots in a lot of spaces around your home, considering buying a 4-pack or 6-pack and potting up your own pots.

I paid $1.58 for a 6-pack of flowers at Lowe's and re-used pots I already owned and potted them up. So, instead of paying $10+ (I did buy a couple of hanging baskets for my porch, but I waited until I saw a sale price in single digits), you can save yourself a good chunk of cash by just taking a a little time to pot them up yourself.

If you want to save even more money, check to see if they have plants clearanced out. Often plants are still healthy but just need to be de-headed or just need some watering.

Earth Day Planting 2011

Happy Earth Day Everyone! This morning we hosted our 4th Annual Earth Day Planting Playgroup. We invited four families to join us on this chilly, drizzly day and plant seeds to be grown indoors for the next 4-6 weeks. Each family was given a labeled egg carton for vegetables and also one for flowers. It was some good, dirty fun and the kids also got some exercise playing on some outdoor toys (not going to let a little drizzle deter them.)

Afterwards, we came back indoors to warm up, some indoor play, and do have a potluck lunch that was completely vegetarian.

I also gave the moms some Ecover Dishwasher Tablets & coupons that I got from a sampling programs to pass out. Next up for the day is getting in a run outside.

#97 Make a Wood Slice Vase/Pot

We haven't made this wood slice vase/pot yet. I bought pots & saved some sticks from the fire pit that were part of a recent tree, so now I am just waiting for the sticks to dry some so that they cut better. I tried cuttingt hem already but they don't cut as well when they are green and you are making such small slices. So, a picture will be yet to come.

Only 4 more posts until I have my 101 items, but do not fret, I plan to keep this blog going. Just not on the daily basis I have been doing now. So, stay tuned.

#81 Use Dehumidifier Water to Water Plants

This one is pretty easy and take less than 2 minutes. Actually, depending upon where your dehumidifier is located & where your plants are located it could be really quick. I timed myself the other day and it take me 15 seconds to empty the dehumidifier and replace the container. So, if you give yourself another minute or two you can pour it on your plants. You won't need to water your indoor plant as often as you need to empty it, but you can always pour it on your outdoor plants and landscaping (which is usually what I do with it when I have the time & energy to run up & down the stairs).

#5 Compost

Ok, you may have to invest some money in this, but it should pay off in the long run. And you can choose the level of investment, you may even have the materials lying around your house, in which case your investment cost will be minimal. To build a compost bin on the cheap you can use a garbage can or wire mesh.

The materials for your compost come from the foods you eat, your newspaper, grass clippings, leaves, and many more items. Check out this list to get an idea of the things you can compost.

And what's more is that you will be able to use your compost to fertilize your garden without chemicals. So, you save money on not having to purchase compost or fertilizer. And what's more is it decreases the amount of your trash, which helps save costs on your trash bill (see #4 for more info).
