Homemade Christmas Gifts

This holiday season our family has received so many awesome homemade gifts from friends and family and I wanted to share with you the hard work others have done. Maybe these ideas will help give you some ideas of your own for gifts that you want to make in the future.

This is my wooden door mat that my parents made for me.

This is my daughter with the quiver my parents made for her. Her arrows are all at home and weren't available for this picture, but she is anxious to use this with them when she goes to Archery practice.

Some yummy ice cream toppings that my parents made (well, probably just my mom.)

This is some homemade lavender-mint fabric softener that a friend made. I have already been using it so the cute tied on label is gone, plus 1/4 of the fabric softener is gone.

My MIL made me this present, which will go to the cabin with us. It is a table runner (folded in half in this picture), a button on towel, napkins, and potholders.

My parents made this wooden slide-in sofa side table for my husband. He actually has one they made him a couple years ago but we use it so often (usually the kids have confiscated it) that he really wanted to have a second one.

My MIL made this beautiful dress for my daughter and a matching one for her American Girl doll. 

My daughter made me this bracelet.

My son made these bird feeders for his grandparents.

What is missing from these pictures of homemade gifts we received are:

* Winter Survival Kit (we have already taken this apart to use, it had in it Kleenex, Airborne, Ricola cough drops, lip balm, hot cocoa, and tea) - from my parents

* Homemade Candies - caramels and peanut clusters made and given by a friend in book club

* Homemade Playdough with a cookie cutter- for my son from his preschool teacher

* Handpainted Snowman Jar filled with a tealight and candies made by my son while at preschool

* Elf/SantaCandy Jars filled with Hersey kisses and a little felt hat on top and black belt for the kids from my parents

* Hand painted picture of our cabin from one of my friends (this is still in process, I was just given a picture of the work in progress so I haven't actually received it)

Plus, I wouldn't want to forget about the gifts of time a couple of friends have given me. One friend treated me to a pedicure at a local spa and another friend took to to a dinner at a winery with thieving from the barrel. 

Gosh, I hope I didn't forget any homemade gifts. They are all wonderful and I really appreciate the time people have spent making those gifts and thinking of us. 

We also received lots of other wonderful gifts that we are extremely thankful to have received and feel very blessed to be gifted with. We are very fortunate.

Review: OdorKlenz All Natural Laundry Additive

My Thoughts on OdorKlenz Laundry Additive

As much as doing laundry is not my favorite thing to spend time on, it is necessary. I don't like re-washing clothes because an odor does not come out and I don't like smelling odors that are reignited when I workout and I certainly don't like when my old cats (just realized they are 15 1/2 and 14 years old now as I write this post) pee on something to show us they are upset about something. Then, OdorKlenz enters my life in the form of a review.

I have been using the 2 different forms of OdorKlenz for different kinds of laundry. The powder form states on it that is "eliminates tough odors", whereas the liquid one just says "eliminates odors" so when I discovered that one of the cats peed on a pile of folded blankets I used the one that said tough odors, because nothing says tough odor to me like cat urine does. Gross! Anyways, often I have to wash loads with cat urine in it twice to get the smell completely gone but that was not the case this time. I only needed to wash them once and the odor was gone. Thankfully the cats have not peed on anything since then, so I haven't been able to repeat this test, but it was successful that time! I did notice on their website that they have additive specifically for use with pet odors or for skunks spray. Ugh! So glad I don't need that kind, but if you have a pet that goes outdoors it might be smart to have some of this on hand.

The liquid OdorKlenz I have been using in my laundry of my workout clothes and my kids swimsuits and towels from swim team.You do use these ADDITIVES with laundry detergent, so I have been using this with a detergent that is formulated to get rid of sweat smells. But using the 2 products together (the OdorKlenz Additive and sport laundry detergent) I have found it is more effective in ridding my workout clothes of set in sweat smells. I saw they also have a different product for foot and shoe odor, which I think would be interesting to try.

My Thoughts:

I was sent 2 bottles of WIN High Performance Sports Detergent, in both the regular version and the Green version. It is designed to work best on synthetic materials that technical, athletic and sports wear are made of. For the most part, that is exactly what all of my workout gear is made of. I really had to no idea that there was detergent specifically formulated to work best on synthetic materials. I have been using the regular version on my clothes, but using the green version on my children's clothes, including their competitive swimsuits. I really like that the green version is fragrance-free and dye-free so that I can use it on their clothes since they get eczema and I have to be wary of what I wash their clothes in.

Below you can see a picture of the detergent in clear cups in front of the respective bottles. The regular is a thicker detergent, much like other regular detergent. Whereas the green detergent is thin in consistency. They have caps on them so you can measure out how much you need, but honestly I just use the cap the first time to see how much I need and then pour it in each time after. I don't like messing around with extra caps, as there is a cap that also seals the detergent too.

I also like that it is septic safe and is phosphate free and that both bottles are made partially with recycled materials.

GIVEAWAY and Review: Eco-Nuts Organic Baby Liquid Laundry Soap

I have always wanted to try Eco-Nuts, so I was pretty excited to be asked to review the product at home for my blog readers. I was sent both the Eco-Nuts Organic Baby Liquid Laundry Soap and the original Eco Nut Organic Laundry Soap. You can read all about What Are Soap Nuts? on their website, but in a "nut-shell" (see what I did there, apparently I think I am clever today - Ha!) it is kinda just that - the shell of a berry (not a nut) that naturally contains soap. Like I just said, it is a berry, but these hard little shells look and feel more like nuts, but they are nut-free and are nut allergy safe.

If you are a frequent reader of my blog, you will remember that in the last week or so I have been talking much more about my daughter's eczema flare up that occurred in a season not typical for her and how it was worse that usual winter flare ups. I have been trying a number of things to help get it under control and gone and we are doing really well, as it is nearly gone. One of those things is that I have switched to watching her laundry in this Eco Nuts Baby Laundry Soap. Fragrances and other products in traditional laundry soaps can be irritating for some people, especially those with skin issues. So, I need to be more careful with what goes in our laundry and make sure that her clothes for are being washed with soap that is not irritating. Now, I can't say for sure that it was a cause because I recently made many changes to help rid her of this flare-up, but it is nearly gone now and I will keep washing her laundry in this soap.

I also wanted to add that this is both septic and grey water system safe. I never used to pay attention to that, but since we have purchased a cabin with a new mound septic system, I have become very aware of looking at products that are septic safe.

This laundry soap can be used in both HE and Regular washers. The liquid soap only needs 1 tsp. for an HE washer, so I measured that out to see how many squirts it would be since I don't want to get out a measuring spoon every time and it is exactly 2 full pumps for a 1 tsp. This  oz bottle is going to last me 60 loads in my HE washer. At $12.99 for a bottle, it will only cost me about 21-cents a load to wash my clothes and it takes up hardly any space.

 Also, the bottle is made out of aluminum, so you can toss it right in the recycling with your cans, but in true SGBG fashion I will probably reuse the bottle. It has a sticker label on it that could be removed and I will clean it out inside and fill with either kids paint or refillable hand soap.

Review: Purex No Sort Laundry Detergent #ad

I had the opportunity to review Purex No Sort for Colors Detergent with my family. I felt like I couldn't really review this product fully because we didn't not buy any new clothes during the review period for me to see if it would stop color transfer. All of our clothes are pretty well worn and are not losing color. What I can tell you about below is how it worked as a detergent an any other thoughts I had on the detergent.

My Thoughts: It worked well in my high efficinecy front loading washing machine and I thought it did a good job of cleaning my clothes in my standard cold water washing. I did use it also with a hot load of white clothes and non-cholorine bleach and it worked well for that. I thought the scent was pleasant and it covered up odors nicely. Overtime as the laundry sat in the dresser and hung in the closet the scent from the Purex No Sort for Colors Detergent faded altogether.

I started using this just a week ago  and it does have a fresh scent that has lasted through the week. The scent fades as the week goes on. The bottle comes with a measuring cap that can be detached. The measuring cap has lines on it telling you how much to use for small, medium and large loads. I typically wash large loads (in a front loading HE washing machine) and I thought adding the line that is for a small load to a large load. In my opinion, the amount needed for a large load was too over powering of a scent. Using about half the amount was perfect and provided a pleasing scent on clothes that lasted. And since we have had this polar vortex lately, I am happy to have something that smells like the outdoors.

Review: Raise Armpit Stain Remover

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I reviewed Raise Armpit Stain Remover by applying to both the collars of some of my husband's dress shirts and a t-shirt. He regularly treats his dress shirts with a stain remover, so I didn't have many to choose from  and the worst one was a shirt that he has had for a long time. Plus, I think the fact that he generally wears a t-shirt undershirt helps from the stains getting too bad.

I do need to admit, my husband generally does his own laundry so I don't usually have to worry about treating any of his stains. He does that himself.

You can buy Raise Armpit Stain Remover from their website. One bottle is $12.50 and 2 bottles are $20, so it's save you some money to buy more at once. It has been featured in quite a few different publications as well and you can see which one on their website.

If you click on the picture you can see it larger and maybe see if there is a difference. I didn't really notice much of a difference on the 2 shirts that had hardly any collar stain. The one with deep stain and the armpit stains seemed slightly better to me. Both were long-time stains, so I have to wonder if it would work better if it was used on new stains.

I also was concerned that the package was labeled that you needed to wear gloves while handling the product, which is not something I generally prefer to see on the labels of my laundry products.

Review: Dropps Laundry Detergent

I received three different varieties of Dropps laundry detergent, each with two pacs in to review. The timing was perfect on the arrival date, as it was laundry day and I was going to use all 6 pacs in one day (1 pac per load). I don't have baby clothes anymore, in fact what I have are dirty clothes of young kids, and I used the baby pacs on their clothes and it got the dirt out just fine. I didn't notice any scent on my clothes either after using the fresh scent, which is good for me. But if you are looking for something that is free of any scent or dyes, that is the third variety I was able to review. I thought the laundry was washed clean and the pacs were super simple to use. They seemed to work well at all temperatures: cold, warm and hot. I have a front loader and I used these pacs in there.

I have really become a fan of premeasured laundry detergent options like these pacs. I like that I am not wasting any detergent by pouring or scooping in too much and I like that there is less mess. You can wash a load of laundry with  Dropps pacs for as low as 28-cents a load for a normal sized package, or as low as 25-cents a load if you buy in bulk. They also made Dropps fabric softener pacs too.

Review: Dizolve Laundry Detergent

I have been using Dizolve laundry strips for about 3 weeks now and I really like them for many reasons. I love that there is 72 strips (that is 72 loads, one strip per load) in one box that is relatively small in comparison to a bottle of laundry detergent that has 72 loads worth in it. This eliminates the need for large jugs of detergent and helps limit some of the plastic ending up in landfills.

I also really like that it is fragrance free. We don't have any allergies or sensitives to fragrances in our home, but I don't like my laundry to be artificially scented, but I do like it if essential oils were used. So, if you do have sensitivities to fragrances in your home, you might be particularly interested in Dizolve detergent strips.

Here you can see that there is a sheet and there are 4 perforated strips in each sheet. They tear apart easily. I love that it is pre-measured and literally take 2 seconds to tear off a sheet. By having pre-measured sheets, you are lessening the likelihood that you will use too much detergent, which is wasteful and costs you, the consumer, more money over time. And you know what, a portion of the proceeds from the sale go to support environmental youth programs like the Sierra Club of Canada or some other fundraising effort they are working with.

These strips can be used for both hot and cold water in both standard and HE machines. Just throw a strip in the bottom of your washer and put clothes on top and begin the machine cycles. That's it. Just throw in your Dizolve strip. No special compartments or special instructions. I have an HE front loader washing machine and I usually think about detergent after I have already loaded my clothes in and it has worked just fine with putting it on top of your clothes in my HE washing machine.

Review: Woolzies Wool Dryer Balls

I had the opportunity to try out Woolzies Dryer Balls. Two of the main claims this product makes in regards to performance is that is will cut down on drying time by 25-30% and that it is guaranteed to last at least 1,000 loads. Well, since I had to write this review in a timely manner, I can't test the longevity of the product, but I can test out if my drying time shortens.

My first loads I used them on were towels, sheets and children's clothing. Those loads were cut by about 30%. So, I am impressed with that claim and results. By shortening the length of drying time, we can save on electric costs and electric consumption, thus saving some money. I once figured out that it cost me 50 cents per load in the dryer (that was a couple years ago, with increasing energy costs it could be more, but for the sake of doing some saving calculations, I will use this number.) So, I would be saying 12.5-15 cents per load. And if these dryer balls last for at least 1000 loads, I will be saving $125-$150 in energy costs a year.

You can buy Woolzies from their website for a cost of $34.95 (plus s/h) for the 6 balls (you use all balls in the dryer at once.) But you no longer have to buy dryer sheets. If you were purchasing an eco-friendly brand of dryer sheets (for the sake of calculations, I will use the cost on Amazon for a box of 80 sheets of an eco-friendly brand for $4). To Dry 1000 loads with dryer sheets it would cost you $50.

Amazon sells Woolzies too! At the time of this post they are actually $33.95 with free Prime Shipping. So, if you bought them from Amazon right now, you would end up saving $16 a year in costs of dryer sheets.

So, now you can see that you can save up to $166 over the course of 1000 loads of laundry in energy costs and dryer sheet costs. You could save even more if they last longer than the guaranteed 1000 loads.

I have even mentioned the environmental impact of Woolzies and need to share that with you. They are pure wool and are free of chemicals, toxins, and plastics that are in other dryer balls or dryer sheets. They are hypo-allergenic and are good to use for people with skin sensitivities. The wool is not supposed to shed from the balls.
