Make a Pipe Cleaner & Bead Tree

Here is another fun little project to do with your toddler or preschooler to encourage fine motor skills, counting skills and color identification.

I made the tree out of pipe cleaner and then asked my son to put beads on. I asked three things of him when he completed this task:
1) Say the name of each color as he put it on
2) Put beads on branches with 1, 2, 3 & 4 (in order) on each side
3) Place 1 yellow bead at the top

You can tailor this activity to how you want it and could consider having them create patterns, have more branches, or having them make the tree.

Try It Tuesday - Measurement & Counting Christmas Tree Activity

 This make look like a simple activity, and it is. But the practical application of it's use with preschoolers is bigger.

All you need is strips of green construction paper cut in to various lengths, some tree decorations, a piece of paper to glue the tree on and a small piece of brown paper (we used some cardboard from the recycling).

Here are a variety of ways you can make this educational:

1) Have your child count how many pieces of green strips there are.
2) Sort the strips of green paper in order from longest to shortest.
3) Count how many decoration there are.
3) Assign how many decorations you want on a strip. We did 1,2,3....7.
4) You could assign a color to each strip (we didn't do this, I just let him pick them out.)
5) Fine motor skills involved with gluing strips and decorations.

Make It Monday: Decorated Sugar Cone Christmas Trees

They are a simple & tasty activity and can be a little messy. 

All you need are sugar cones (I had 4 leftover from this summer when I made the campfire smores with them.

Just spread green frosting over the sugar cones (actually, this was leftover from my son's John Deere birthday party and I just stuck it in the freezer, this is turning in to a use up project - Haha!)

Then place on sprinkles & candies and you are finished.

Make a Felt Advent Christmas Tree

This is another Felt Christmas Tree project, just a much larger scale than the ornament I shared with you yesterday. You will need to go to a fabric store to procure a piece of felt from a bolt to make the tree, but the ornaments can all be made with the small craft pieces of felt.

I used leftover puffy fabric paint to paint on my numbers (I have had this stuff forever!) but if you don't have any type of fabric paint you could just use permanent markers.

I have seen this project done where it was just used as a felt board activity without the numbers. I wanted to include the numbers & equal number of colored balls to

• Use it as Advent Calendar
• Make a Counting Acitivity Out of It
• Encourage Sorting of the Colors
• Talk About Patterns
• Utilize it For a Fine Motor Activity
• Reinforce Color Identification

My kids were very excited to play with it right away and get all the balls on the tree. I loved listening to my son work on learning his numbers. He only wanted to put on double digit numbers, since those identification skills are newer to him.

I just used double stick tape to adhere it to the wainscot in our kitchen.I decided to put it in there, because it is at the kitchen table that I do our preschool-at-home projects and activities.

Make a Felt & Button Christmas Tree Ornament

 This is a fun little project for preschoolers to encourage counting and color identification. I cut a tree out of a piece of felt and cut a slit in the top through with a tied a loop of ribbon through.

Next I took out some buttons and asked my son to count them. Next step was to glue them on. As he did that I asked him to tell me what color each one was.

It was a fun little project that did not take a lot of time but helped to reinforce some skills.
